Pathways to Nursing

Kansas City Public School District, Truman Medical Centers Nursing, Community Health Education Services

The program was initiated through the Chief Community Relations Officer and the Kansas City Public School Assist. Superintendent of Innovation & Special Projects. The initial goal was to pair CNA students up with Nurse mentors. The discussion grew from there to develop a program for CNA’s to shadow and attend education sessions at the Hospital. Upon satisfactory completion of the program and their clinicals, the students will be issued a letter of intent to hire.

Students come from Manual Career Technical Center, a part of the Kansas City Public Schools located in the Urban Core and underserved zip codes. The resources allocated are Truman Medical Centers staff time and limited budget for supplies such as food etc. Transportation is provided by the school. Students attend a weekly session at the Hospital paired with a nurse mentor.

Currently this is exclusive to Truman Medical Centers

The anticipated outcomes are: employment, advanced knowledge of career options and development of a talent pipeline.
