Nice Ride Community Partnership

Nice Ride MN, William W. Jepson Day Treatment Program and Comprehensive Cardiovascular Prevention Program (C2P2) of Hennepin County Medical Center, U.S. Bank

The program started in 2016 as a collaboration between mental health and cardiology teams at Hennepin County Medical Center to take a holistic approach to treating patients. Through this program, patients can start therapeutic lifestyle changes that can reduce their risk of a heart attack or stroke — and at the same time improve their mental health. Patients are given “prescriptions” to ride a bicycle as a form of treatment. With the support of Nice Ride MN bike share program, patients can rent a bicycle free of charge.

The program serves adults with Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) who participate in the program. Nice Ride Community Partnership combine’s clinical goals from the William W. Jepson Day Treatment Program with the C2P2 goals and is supported with bicycles and funding from Nice Ride MN and U.S. Bank. Better physical health equals better mental health.

This program creates a collaboration between the William W. Jepson Day Treatment program and the Comprehensive Cardiovascular Prevention Program (C2P2) to address multiple health concerns in their participant population and measure results. The two clinical groups teamed with Nice Ride MN and U.S. Bank for program support via bicycles and funding for the participant’s use of Nice Ride MN services.

In its first year in existence (2016), the program has had 31 participants who logged a total of 957 hours. These participants were followed by Hennepin County Medical Center cardiologist Dr. Woubeshet Ayenew to track their progress while within the program.
